Show CONTROL OF SUGAR SITSOCIOBER 1 Food Administration Takes Steps to Prevent Speculation. WASHINGTON, Sept. 11. The entire American sugar industry will be placed under government control October 1, the food administration announced tonight, by the institution of a licensing system to Include manufacture, refining and imports. im-ports. The step was decided on with the approval of President Wilson to prevent pre-vent speculative prices, and to assure equitable distribution. "The critical situation In the sugar industry, in-dustry, anticipated during the fall months, makes prompt action necessary," said the announcement. "The sugar problem being be-ing one of distribution, as well as one of supply, the solution is to be brought about by voluntary agreements with the trade, the essential principles of which already have been settled." Beet sugar producers' already have accepted ac-cepted a scale of prices suggested by the food administration, which means a saving sav-ing to the consuming public of more than $30,000,000 between now and the .first of the year. Cane sugar refiners have agreed to import all their requirements require-ments through a committee to be named by the food administration. Institution of a licensing system will prevent hoarding and will insure a stab- ; ilized price. - Independent sugar producers through- i out the intcrmountain country are not 1 satisfied with the price of $7.25 a hundred, hun-dred, tentatively fixed by the beet sugar producers and Herbert M. Hoover, food administrator. Representatives of the i People's Sugar company, the Utah-Idaho company and the Amalgamated Sugar company left last night for Washington to attend a conference on Friday, at which time the price for beet sugar will be decided de-cided upon. At the same time the matter mat-ter of doing away with brokers in sugar sales will be discussed. The independent companies in the intermountain states say that the meeting of the beet sugar producers which tentatively fixed the prices was not representative of the beet sugar Industry. |
