Show TENTATIVE PLAN FOR VOCATIONAL SYSTEM Dr.. E. G. G-owans Outlines Method of Working Under Federal Education Appropriation for States. A tentative plan, for working out a system of vocational education in the public schools and colleges of Utah has been presented to Dr. (J. A. Prosser at Washington, director of the federal board of vocational education, by Dr. E. G. Gowans, state superintendent of; public instruction. The state board of examiners has. approved the plan. A committee of the state board of education is now working upon the details de-tails of the courses of study in agriculture, agricul-ture, home economics and the trades and industries. The entire work will be in charge of a state director, assisted by a director of the agricultural division aud of the division of home economics. The federal appropriation of $15,000 ! will be divided between these two di- I visions and the cost of training teachers for the work. The salary of the state director of vocational education will be paid from the common school fund, while the salary of te state supervisor of agricultural education will be paid one-half from the federal fund and one-half one-half from the state appropriation. The salary of the state supervisor of train ! ing in home economics will be paid out of the common school fund. The general state director must be a specialist, a graduate of a standard college, col-lege, with at least one year of graduate work and not less than five years' experience ex-perience in practical teaching. Similar qualifications are required of the other heads and teachers. Jn the trades and industries division pupils will be required to devote not less than two two-hour periods a week, the time to be taken out of their working hours bv permission of their employers. Special arrangements have been made for boys in the mining districts of the state, where apprenticeships must be served for such vocations as general mechanics, tool sharpeners, mill hands and mine electricians. Teacher training centers may be established in the University Uni-versity of Utah and the Utah Agricultural Agricul-tural college. |
