Show APPLICATIONS SWEEP 001ASA1ME "Pie Committee" of the Democrats Throws Up Hands Temporarily. ADJOURNMENT TAKEN Meeting to Be Held Today at Which Something Definite Def-inite May Be Done. An avalanche of applications swept down upon the Democratic county committee com-mittee when it sat as a "pie committee" last night in the office of Chairman B. W,. Mendenhall and delayed, temporarily at least, the weeding out of the unfaithful unfaith-ful and unworthy. The committeemen struggled valiantly against heavy odds for upward of three hours and then "took to the tall uncut." I Not onlv were the applications numerous I to a marked degree, but a goodly share 1 of them lacked the proper Indorsements 1 of the district, ward and precinct chair- men. , , I With a view to getting the petitions arranged in some kind of order, they were sorted into groups, according to the residence resi-dence of the applicant, representing tho five municipal wards and the various county precincts. The district, ward and precinct chairmen will hold a pow-wow some time today with a view to indorsing indors-ing those deemed worthy and the county committee will meet tonight to give th approved petitions the once over. Indorsements Needed. One thing is assured: The petitions from Salt Lake county, in order to get a hearing hear-ing before the state "pie committee, must be properly indorsed in time for the big Democratic meeting to be held Ht the Newhouse hotel next Friday. If the county organization cannot make its rec- i ommendations tonight another meeting probably will be held Thursday night. The Bull Moose counLy "pie committee" commit-tee" is keeping discreetly In the background. back-ground. Jt has held aloof from the Democratic Demo-cratic county committee so far and has taken no part in the activities of th Progressive state committee toward the division of the spoils. There has been no i open clash in any direction and it is said ! that the relations between the two county coun-ty organizations are of an amicable nature, na-ture, but the Bull Moosers of the county do not take kindly to the edict of the Progressive state committee that all recommendations rec-ommendations for state appointments must be scrutinized by it before passing them to the Democratic state "pie committee" com-mittee" for final action. Only Few Applicants. According to all reports, the number of Progressives in the county who aspire j to political appointment is comparatively i small, but those few petitioners want the jobs mighty bad. The chief cause for the strained relations between the Progressive i county and state organizations, if such ' relations really exist. Is said to be due to the fact that Hugh A. McMillin and A. T. Moon both aspire to a post on the state board of land commissioners. Mr. . Moon, being Progressive national chair- man, is believed by the county organiza- i tion to be favored over Mr. McMillin by j the state committee. For this reason the ! countv leaders are not disposed to per- ; mit the state leaders to set aside Mr. Mc- j Millln's application and recommend, instead, in-stead, the appointment of Mr. Moon. ! Mr. McMilHn has declared his candidacy : for the position, while Mr. Moon has as- ! serted that he Is not a candidate for the 1 post. However, he has qualified to the j extent of saying that if the appointment i should be tendered him he would be In- I clined to consider acceptance. j Action Is Postponed. : With a view to bringing about a better j understanding and to allowing ample time J for the filing of all applications for its . scrutiny, the Progressive state commit- tee has postponed final action in the way of recommendations until next Friday afternoon, aft-ernoon, the date of the big Democratic state pow-wow. The meeting of the Bull Moose state leaders will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon in the office of Secretary X. A. Robertson, and shortly afterward State Chairman Wesley K. Walton will present to Mathonihah Thomas, Democratic state i chairman, the recommendations of the ! Progressive state organization. If the I present pians of the Progressive county '1 committee are carried out, its recommen- ,1 datlons will be presented to the Demo- j crats separate from those handed in by I Mr.-Walton. I |
