Show SHERIFFS INDORSE DEPUTYCLEVELAND Reccomend County Jailer for Place as Warden of Utah State Prison. At a meeting of the Utah Sheriffs' association asso-ciation held in tho office of Sheriff John S. Coiiess yesterday afternoon, George E. Cleveland was unanimously indorsed for appointment to the position of warden of : the state prison to succeed Arthur Pratt. Mr. Cleveland is at present a deputy sheriff and is head jailer of the Salt Lake county jail. In recommending Mr. Cleveland Cleve-land for the position of warden, the association asso-ciation calls attention to his record since taking charge of the county jail. The resolution, as passed, was addressed ad-dressed to Simon Bamberger, governor-elect. governor-elect. Two candidates for appointment to state offices have now been indorsed by the association. K. O. Reading, (sheriff of Davis county, was some time ago indorsed in-dorsed as the association's choice for the position of state fish and game commissioner. commis-sioner. The routine matters before the organization organ-ization concerned recommendations to he submitted to the legislature with regard to legislation regarded as needed. Better laws with regard to the apprehension appre-hension of automobile thieves are to be urged by the sheriffs. Also, some amendment amend-ment will be asked to the taw controlling salaries of sheriffs. It is pointed out that under the present law some- sheriffs in outlying counties receive a maximum of $400 a year for their services and their chief deputies not more than two-thirds as much as the sheriff. It is argued that competent men cannot be had for such salaries. |
