Show P OFFICIALS ILL ' TAKE UP MATTER OF M PRICES Conference Will Be Held ini Washington to Hear Reports Re-ports of Nation-wide Probe. BOSTON ATTORNEY SUSPECTS CORNERS Warehouse Managers Ques-L- tioned in Chicago by Rep-t Rep-t resentatives of Federal j ! Attorney's Office. BOSTON", Dec. 5. George W. Anderson, Ander-son, federal district attorney in charge of a nation-wide inquiry into the cause: of the high prices of foodstuffs and; other necessaries, left here today for; New York and "Washington. He said he would confer in New York with; ! agents of the department of justice and 1 j later would proceed to Washington. He i was accompanied by Special Assistant Attorney General Alder. Issues Statement. The district attorney gave out the following statement: In Washington we are to have conferences with Secretary Houston of the department of agriculture, Secretary Redfxeld of the department depart-ment of commerce, and representatives representa-tives of the interstate commerce commission and the federal trade commission, for the purpose of enabling en-abling the department or justice to co-ordinate its investigations, in order or-der to ascertain whether the marked increase in prices of commodities com-modities is due to acts in violation of anti-trust laws. Meantime the nubile should understand un-derstand that special agenis all over the country are now and have been for some time past at work on this problem. The department has under un-der cocsideration the calling of a . special grand jury Ln some district, possibly Chicago or New York, to investigate the whole subject. The department desires particularly to rbe informed of all facts warranting a reasonable suspicion of 'corners .j or attempts to control the market. We already know enough to say that much, but probably not all, of the absurd rise in prices is due to hysterical, panic-stricken, bunched buying. The American business public pub-lic doe not know how to handle a "sellers' M market. The "bear" and not the "bull" is the sane business man in these times. |
