Show M'DANIEL ACQUITTED Oil in CHARGE Prosecuting Attorney Given Liberty After Sensational Sensa-tional Trial. ST. JOSEPH, Mo., Dec. 6. OBcar D. McDaniel, prosecuting attorney of Buchanan Bu-chanan county, was acquitted by a jury in the criminal court here tonight of t lie charge of having- murdered Mrs. Harriet Moss McDaniel, his wife. The jury deliberated de-liberated for two hours. Mrs. McDaniel was found beaten and dying In her bedroom hero about 11! o'clock the night of July 14. She died within a few hours without having regained re-gained consciousness. Two of her three children, asleep in an adjoining room, had not been awakened by the murder of their mother. McDanlel's story of the events of the night of the murder was that he was summoned up town by a decoy telephone . call about 11:15 p. m. nnd returned homo at midnight. He engaged in a pistol duel outside his residence with an unknown assailant who hid behind a tree, he stud, and then, going into the house to obtain another revolver witS which to continue tho fight, found his Aifo on the bedroom floor dying, her head in a pool of blood. Enemies occasioned by his work as prosecutor were accused by him and by hie friends as being guilty of the crime. A grand jury was called and McDaniel was indicted for the crime. The election November 7 resulted In McDanlel's defeat for re-election, although a majority of the candidates on tho county coun-ty ticket of his party wero voted into office. His trial began November 13. |
