STATEMENT IS ISSUED EarlJ Decision on Points at Issue Is Promised to the Farmers. At a "get-together" conference held yesterday between representatives of the various sugar companies operating in L'tah and of the Utah slate farm bureau certain requests which the farmers are making in connection with the handling of the 1917 beet crop were submitted to the sugar officials and were taken under advisement by those officials. The farmers want $7 a ton, minimum price, for beets and 12 cents per ton additional for each per cent of sugar content above 15 per cent. The sugar officials of-ficials have promised to submit the matter mat-ter to their boards of directors and to give the farmers" a written answer as soon as possible. Companies Represented. . At the meeting were represented the Utah-Idaho Sugar company, the Amalgamated Amalga-mated Sugar company and the Layton sugar factory. The committee from the farm bureau was headed by W. J. Chad-wick Chad-wick of Utah county. Thomas R,. Cutler of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company was chairman of the conference con-ference and Howard V. Alston, representing represent-ing the farm bureau and the farmers, was secretary of the conference. Mr. Cutler announced, after the meeting, meet-ing, that it was a "get-together" conference con-ference at which the beetgrowers submitted sub-mitted their requests and the sugar officials offi-cials received them, and the whole matter mat-ter of prices for beets and the handling of the 1917 crop was thoroughly discussed. "The meeting was absolutely harmonious." harmoni-ous." said Mr. Cutler. "We simply got together and talked over the situation, so that all will understand." Official Statement. Following the meeting the following official of-ficial statement was Issued by Chairman Cutler and Secretary Alston, setting forth just what requests were made by the beetgrowers and what the proceedings of the conference were: To the farmers and beetgrowers of Utah: A conference of a committee appointed from the l'tah state farm bureau with the officials of the Utah-Idaho, Utah-Idaho, Amalgamated and Layton Sugar Su-gar companies was held this evening in the office of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company. Present at the conference were W. J. Chadwick, Utah county; Howard V. Alston, Salt Lake county; W. C. Parke, Boxelder county; Ephraim Bergeson, Cache county; W. I. Lay-ton, Lay-ton, Davis county; August F. Katter, Sevier county; James Rues, Weber county; George Foster. Franklin county, coun-ty, Idaho; R. H- Smith, Rexburg, Idaho, Ida-ho, members of the committee, and Thomas R. Cutler, George Austin, Utah-Idaho Sugar company; F. G. Taylor, Amalgamated Sugar company; E. P. Ellison, D. E. Layton, Layton Sutrar company. The committee, carrying out the injunction in-junction from the state farm bureau, met the officials in a spirit of cooperation. co-operation. The spirit of the conference confer-ence was one of desire to get together togeth-er and work together in future for the mutual benefit of farmers and sugar su-gar manufacturers In the Intermountain Intermoun-tain country. j ' Specific Requests. The committee made the following specific requests: 1. That the farmers be allowed $7 per ton, minimum price, for beets for 1917. with cents per ton additional addi-tional for each per cent of sugar content above 15 per cent. 2. That they be allowed better un- loading facilities. ! 3. That the farmers be allowed 1 the privilege of starting digging by October 1 and continue as fast as they desire. 4. That the farmers be given first consideration In buying pulp at the price of 25 cents per ton. 5. That sugar companies co-operate with farmers, through their state organization. In securing local field men and weighmasters, and such other oth-er questions as shall be for their mutual mu-tual benefit. Extended Informal discussion prevailed pre-vailed on each request; every man present expressed his views in a perfectly per-fectly frank and businesslike manner. man-ner. Under Advisement. The sugar officials took under advisement ad-visement the committee's requests and agreed to furnish a written reply at their earliest convenience. They were unable to give definite answer until conferring with their boards of directors. Their reply will be mailed to each member of the committee and published in all the leading newspapers newspa-pers of the. state, as is this statement state-ment of the proceedings of the conference. con-ference. The growers, therefore, will get the answer first hand. All present were agreed that in the past there had been too -much ill feeling and misunderstanding between the growers and the sugar companies and that In future their aim should be. in a spirit of fairness to both sides, to co-operate and build, rather than misunderstand and tear down.
