Show Wanna better TV? (Salfl Or Write, Says Welti JSAKYR. BIODGETC . Sson management is ferased to keep its stall. sta-ll. 1 and still keep sex, "a and violence to, a -mum. in THIS can be ac-2ed ac-2ed with the help of ': 2jblic," television per-, per-, aij Bob Welti told the SaiiM Area Chamber of tTera at noon luncheon asday. Here's no question but ft a difficult task, and ?nj more difficult all the . smlithe increase of smut . 3 Revised over national I, -'HE URGED theiJublrc to call and write to the station and voice their opposition to programs that are aired which do not meet high standards. "Your letters and telephone complaints will be recorded with the station," he said. "Also, any contact and complaints with sponsors of such programs will have a big effect. Each individual complaint adds up and that's the only way to get the job done." ' HE TOLD Chamber members and guests that "television has a tremendous effect on our lives second ' Only to the decisions made in the White House. "Some of these effects are tragic, like the crimes that are committed following the format of a television show recently aired," he said. MR. WELTI compared the early days of television (he's been in it for 20 years) with today's taped shows. "We don't make the mistakes mis-takes now that we used to when shows were done live," he said, "but we don't have the fun that we used to either." HE TOLD the story of doing a weather show live and no- ticed that a cameraman was holding up a sign which read: "Move forward a little, Bob, you're unzipped.' "I found out during commercial com-mercial break that it was all a joke, but I didn't know it at the time. Television is a crazy business and a lot of people watch us make some pretty good goofs." HE ALSO told how humor can backfire on you. "I came on the air and reported how a strong wind had whipped through Elko, Nev., causing extensive damage. I commented that it had blown over every tree in the city both trees. "I THOUGH that was humorous, but Elko residents didn't and I had to goon the air and apologize for the remark, which was the proper thing to do," he said. He said that weather for-casting for-casting is not as difficult in the Intermountain Area as some parts of the country. "WE DON'T have the tornadoes, tor-nadoes, hurricanes and other weather disasters that most of the country experiences. A strong east wind through Davis County is about the worst we get," he said. But he related how he once told deer hunters that the opening day would be beautiful beau-tiful clear and warm. "You can even wear your Bermuda shorts. "THE NEXT morning there was a foot of snow in the val ley and several feet in the higher elevations where scores of deer hunters had taken me for my word and dressed for warm weather. "That's the time that . hunters would just as soon shot me as a big buck," he laughed. |
