Show Money Bag EJecovetredl From Jordan Woods Cross police officers are shaking their heads over the recovery of a money bag filled with checks that were retrieved from the Jordan River. POLICE Chief Niles Stahle said Wednesday that the checks were taken, along with $1 ,600 in cash and about $500 in foodstuffs from the Woods Cross Market, 1400 South 800 West on Oct. 8. Chief Stahle said that three juveniles, two 15 years old and another 17, had been arrested in connection with the burglary and were being held in detention at MOWEDA. Two of the youths were from Woods Cross and one was from out of state. CHIEF Stahle said most of the cash and the foodstuffs had been recovered earlier. The opened safe was hauled from the Jordan River last week. Police saw little hope of recovering the checks, which had been kept in the safe in a money bag. Then on Wednesday, Woods Cross police were notified by Riverton Police officers that the money bag containing the checks had been found in a portion of the Jordan River called Jordan Narrows near Camp Williams. ACCORDING to Chief Stahle the checks are in "pretty good condition" and can eventually be cashed. First the checks must be marked as evidence. "Hopefully the store will get the checks back in a few weeks," Chief Stahle said. The coincidence of finding , the checks was compounded by the fact that the river was not drained for that purpose. Chief Stahle said the river is periodically drained and the money bag happened to lodge in that portion of the river. The regular canvas money bag had apparently been waterproofed. water-proofed. THE THREE juveniles being be-ing held in MOWEDA were arrested in Orem almost two weeks ago for shoplifting. After that arrest. Chief Stahle said it was determined that the same three were allegedly wanted for escaping from the Uintah County Jail in Evans-ton, Evans-ton, Wyo. Chief Stahle said another burglary charge is pending, which may tie one of the juveniles into five other burglaries and auto theft. |
