Show ffllll "OK By GARY R. BLODGETT Bountiful City Council decided Wednesday night that the city should not be in the business of raising exotic birds. BY unanimous vote the council refused Rendell Mabey's offer to donate his birds to the city. The council gave its reasons for declining the offer as high cost of housing and caring for the birds. MAYOR Morris F. Swapp said he contacted the Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City and was told that its (Tracy) budget bud-get for caring for their birds amounted to $60,000 per year. "I know that they have more birds and elaborate facilities, but even half that amount per year for care of the birds would be a lot for our city," said Mayor Swapp. "WE'D LOVE to have the birds, it would be unique for a city our size, but we must place our priorities and apparently ap-parently caring for birds is not on top of the list." Councilman Warde Tolman said he felt that the council should thank Mr. Mabey very much for such a generous offer but that the council should decline his donation because of the subsequent expense ex-pense of caring for the birds. They said they had received several calls and each expressed opposition to the city getting into the bird 'i1 ing business. Thus, the long-debated from Mr. Mabey unanimously, but respj tively, denied. V |
