While customB receipts havo fallen off under the new tariiT, tho internal revonuo bureau is coming to the rescue with increased in-creased collections from indirect taxes. The total collectod by the bureau from July 1, 1913, to January 31, 191-1, was $191,792,279, an increase of $2,(336,3 29 over tho corresponding period for the previous year. The tax on tobacco brought $47,680,-435, $47,680,-435, an increase of $2,371,258, and fermented fer-mented liquors, $40,276,380, an increase 61 $3,432,300. Distilled spirits, including includ-ing whisky, howovor, brought in only $98,940,304, a decrease- of $1,409,710. Included in the totals for the seven months was $59,328 paid by individuals subject to the income rax This tax is uot payable, under tho law, until assessments assess-ments nay o been made, and need not be paid until June next, but many persons per-sons sent their monoy to collectors in tho month of January. The official, tabulation of tho returns of individuals subject to tho tax had not bcon completqd tonight. |
