Show APPROPRIATION FOB GORREIDALE SHEEP New Zealand Cross Said to Be the Best Breed for the Western Ranges. Special to The Tribune. WASHINGTON, March 5, An appropriation appro-priation of a sum sufficient to purchase and import a few Correidulc sheop from New Zealand to form the nucleus of a breeding herd is incorporated in tho pending agricultural appropriation bill, through .the efforts of western members. The placing of wool and mutton on tho frco list has accentuated tho importance, import-ance, if not tho uucessity, of securing a larger sheep with a heavier fleece if tuis industry is to continue in tho rango states, and it Us believed tho Correidalo will" moot this demand. Tho Correidalo is produced by crossing cross-ing high-grade Morino ewes with Lincoln Lin-coln rams". lu Now Zealand this typo lias been carefullv bred for the past thirty years with" a view of retaining the best characteristics of tho Merino and at the same time adding to the size of the animal and' its length of fleece. While crosses of tho Morino with heavier sheop havo been common in this country for years, thus far wo havo not produced a distinctive typo capable of reproducing its kind. Tho Correidale seems to be tho only breed, however, in which tho best characteristics character-istics of the Morino have become fixed in a new typo or breed of increased size of body and weight of fleece. It is claimed for the Correidalcs that on the same pasture tho lambs at marketing ago, and the sheop when full grown, are considerably heavier than the average Merino, and that thoy produce a' fleece of appreciablv greater length and weight and of considerable less shrinkage than tho pure-blood Merino. It is thought this will prove the ideal rango sheep. Applications have been roceivod by western members from sheepmen who do-sire do-sire to make importations in connection with tho government purchase, and it is likely that any who wish to buy theso animals in this manner will bo accommodated ac-commodated after the money is made available. Such requests should be made through representatives in congress. |
