Though little hope Is held out for the safety of any of "the fifteen men who were caught by yesterday's terrific gas explosion In the Lawson coal mine at i Black Diamond, reseuerers are work-I work-I lng heroically to reach the entomled I miners. At midnight they had reached the first level, at a depth of . 3S feet. The work Is extremely hazardous haz-ardous owing to crumbling walls I it Is thought to be hardly possible pos-sible that five of the men, who were , -in the car below the sixth level, tny have esenped death If the explosion occurred aboe that level. It is believed be-lieved that the car was hut off by a sdidc of earth and that the men may ibe Imprisoned 2,200 feet below the surface The explosion completely wrecked tho workings of the mine, causing the walls and roof to cave in and hurling heavy timber and steel supporters sup-porters out of the mouth of the shaft with such velocity that thoy were shot half a mile across country. The cause of the explosion has not been ascertained. |
