The full Assessment and Program documents are also available for those wishing to review data and proposals in greater detail. The program has been transmitted tran-smitted to Congress by President Ford. Based on the assessment, it is designed td meet, at reasonable costs, the Nation's potential long-term needs for resources, such as outdoor recreation, winderness, range forage, timber, water, and wildlife habitat. It reflects the thinking of thousands of concerned con-cerned citizens who participated in public information meetings throughout the Nation during the past year. The Resources Planning Act provides for long-term planning, involving Forest Service research, cooperative forestry activities and National Forest System lands, for production of renewable resources. Congress has asked for the assessment and program to assist in its providing long-range direction for natural resources, and to relate annual budget deliveration to long-range resource needs of the Nation. The program presented to Congress calls for more dispersed recreation opportunities op-portunities and moderate allocation of National Forest land to wilderness. It also emphasizes cost-effective cost-effective investments in the timber and range resources on private and public lands and calls for increased wildlife habitat improvement.
