Redmen suffered 4-1 setback in no-hitter hurled by Bruce Hurst of the Flyers. Hurst hurles no-hitter; defeats Redmen 4-1 Bruce Hurst of the Dixie Flyers hurled a no-hitter against the Cedar High School Redmen Tuesday afternoon to give the St. George crew a commanding 2-0 game lead in the best of four series that makes up the Region XI battle this season. Hurst had control of the game from the outset as he struck out the side after giving up a pair of walks and the only Redmen tally of the contest. He picked up 11 strikeouts over the seven innings of play and wound up the final inning just as strong with three strikeouts. v The Redmen got excellent pitching from Lee Holmes who scattered five hits, but seven errors contributed to the Flyers victory. ' Holmes gave up no more than one hit in . any one inning and collected three strikeouts and gave up four walks. Hurst gave up four walks as well. The Redmen got on the boards first in the first inning of play. Charles Judd walked, moved to second on a walk, moved to third on an error and scored on a pass ball. Dixie came back to knot the score in the second frame. Dayne Reber singled. Ray Nelson sacrificed, moved to third on a passed ball and cam? on tq. score on an 'error. ,," " "" ' ",' 1 The tie breaker came in the fourth frame when Nelson walked and came around to score on a wild pitch. Icing was put on the cake in the sixth when Reber, who had two hits in the game doubled and came around to score on an error. In the seventh the final tally came across when Empey of the. Flyers singled moved to third on a wild pitch and an error then came on to score before a rundown . between first and second was tagged. The two teams have met twice and the Flyers have scored victories in both battles behind the strong arm of Hurs,t. Several major league scouts were on hand Tuesday afternoon at the Cedar City park to watch Hurst show his stuff. And if the scouts were not impressed the Redmen were, as were all the fans that were on hand to witness his efforts. The Flyers need only one win in the next two outings to knot the league title and advance into the state 3A playoffs. For the Redmen they will be on the road today, Thursday, as they travel to Hurricane to meet the Tigers. It will be a tough battle to get the Redmen up for this contest after the loss to the Flyers Tuesday. Coach Dick Hobbs indicated that he hopes to move the team around and develop some experience, in, the next few , games as they move toward the finale of 4 the short, but interesting baseball season ' |
