Show Volunteer Support Service program new service to assist elderly persons The SUSC office of Volunteer Support Services is happy to announce a new service, Project Independence, designed to help the many older or handicapped persons who prefer to live out their bonus years in independence in-dependence without worrying about the special dangers that living alone entails. Project Independence, a Telephone Reassurance plan, is a protective service wherein daily telephone calls are made by a Volunteer Caller at an appointed ap-pointed time to check on the well being of elderly or incapacitated persons who live alone. If the client does not answer at the appointed time, a neighbor makes a house call according to a pre-arranged plan. Should a medical crisis be discovered, the Volunteer Caller is ready to assist by supplying such critical information as the name of the doctor to -be called and the relatives to be notified. : A telephone reassurance service for Cedar City is nearly ready to go into operation, but Volunteer Support Services is most anxious that everyone who needs or wants the service has an opportunity to sign up. This is a free service! Any person, regardless of race color or creed, over the age of 55, who lives alone and has experienced any of the fears that accompany living alone is eligible. The program is not limited to so-called "shut-ins". Extremely active persons can have accidents ac-cidents which in advanced years can be quite serious and even fatal if they go unnoticed. It need not happen to you. Volunteers, the lifeline of Project Independence, are also needed. Volunteers will accpet NEW SERVICE OFFERED. Otto Fife of Cedar City gives new-Volunteer new-Volunteer Support Service a try. Project Independence is designed as a Telephone Reassurance plan for the elderly or incapacitated persons who live alone. Fife is honorary chairman of the project. the responsibility of a daily phone call at a regular tome to an elderly person living alone. Volunteers are trained to be aware of community events which their clients might enjoy and share this information. Training in emergency procedures is also given.
