The greater the withdrawal of men from school the greater is thc need for training train-ing . them,' both to maintain athletics during the war and to tit the boys themselves for the duty of war, if they are needed. For this reason, the entire male student stu-dent group at the, university will be encouraged to participate in sports this vear. The intraschool baseball scries lias this end in view, and track meets of a similar nature will further advance ad-vance the plan. With the completion of the two new tennis courts at the university, interest in this activity is increasing. These courts are of 'the latest type. They are built of cement and consequently will be available from tennis sooner than the old clay courts were, and maybe may-be used directly after a rain. The cement ce-ment has a coloring substance which relieves the eyo strain, due the strong reflection of the sun, which is so severe pn most courts. Dave Coleman is expected ex-pected to lead the racquet men this vear. He has had two vyars of experience expe-rience Professor A. L. Mathews will a'ain coach the teams. If Utah should win out in this state, he hopes to stage a competition with thhe winning Colorado Colo-rado institution, as was the case three vears ago. There has been much talk of organizing organiz-ing a swimming team, and there is much enthusiasm about the subject. Interest In-terest in swimming is constantly m-crea"inc m-crea"inc among the "V" students, and it is not unlikely that some fast men will be developed before long. As it is some good high school swimmers have entered the school. The annual "U" cross-country run will be held again this spring on "II' dav "I"'" the middle of April. The crround has not been 111 good condition for outdoor training for this event, but some of the eanaidatos are beginning begin-ning practice on the. running track at Hie school. |
