Show TO MANUFACTURE AEROPLANE ENGINES About the highest compliment that could be paid an American automobile plant was the recent closing of a contract con-tract between the Rolls-Royce company of England and the F. B. Stearns company com-pany of Cleveland, whereby the latter concern will make Rolls-Royce aeroplane aero-plane motors in Cleveland. The excellence of the mechanical construction, con-struction, particularly the motor, of the Rolls-Royce automobile, has long been recognized both abroad and in this country. Shortly after Great Britain entered the war, the bi plant of the Rolls-Royce Rolls-Royce company was commandeered and its engineers and highly trained me- chanics turned to making aeroplane engines. j These are the motors which have j since furnished the power to the fight- j ing British planes which have won such I wonderful victories. Last year the demand became great- j er than the English plants under the 3 control of the Rolls-Royce companv could supplv. and, with the sanction 5 of the United States government, Rolls- , Royce engineers came to this country " in an endeavor to secure help from plants in this country. They made a careful canvass of American motor car factories and finally decided that the workmanship which had been turning out Stearns-Knight Stearns-Knight cars for six years was the workmanship which most closelv approached ap-proached the Eolls-Royce standards. Negotiations were then opened' which led to the F. B. Stearns company com-pany undertaking the manufacture of Rolls-Royce aeroplane engines costing more than $1 1,000;000. |
