Show 4 f Vaudeville Gossip The most notable item in vaudeville ! news last week was the announcement that Martin Beek, managing director of , the Orpheum circuit, will present Mme. ! Sarah Bernhardt in the Orpheum theaters thea-ters for twenty-eight weeks, starting this week in Memphis. The "Divine Sarah" i has Just returned to the United States from Cuba. In the Orpheum houses she ; will present "Champ d'Hormeur" (From : the Theater to the Field of Honor), writ- i tern by- a French officer at the front, and "Camille," opening her engagements with the war playlet and presenting , "Camtlle" for her final performances. It , was Mr. Beck who originally presented Mme. Bernhardt in vaudeville on this continent. Her enpmgement then extended extend-ed from December 2, 1912, to May 2S of the following year. Her sala ry of J70HO a week still remains the highest ever paid in vaudeville. WlUon Ickaye, who returned to vaudeville vau-deville a fw weeks ago, will spend the balance of the season in Orpheum vaudeville. vaude-ville. Arrangements to this effect were completed last week. Mr. Larkaye has a dramatic vehicle called "The Ferret ," written by Hall McAllister. This one-act play gives the brilliant aMor a fine opportunity op-portunity to exhibit his dramatic strength. ! Wellington Cross has started a tour of the Orpheum circuit, this week. He has new and original songs, in chid ing one which calls for perfect knitting. And he dos It. Iast season Mr. Cros appeared , with Lois Josephine. Miss Josephine suf-, suf-, fered an injury to hr ankle and Mr. J Cross had to "go it" alone. He mnde i such a success of it that he is sticking to it. Miss Josephine hrt-s now fuliy recovered re-covered from her Injury and la wt wek was showii.g New Yorkers a new "single" "sin-gle" act. Another illustration of th fact that Orpheum vau'Ieviliegoers frequently gee great artists before the east has the opportunity op-portunity is furnished by Trixi Fri- ganza. Miss Friganza has not been seen I in New York vaudeville for something ' like two seasons. She was in a musical attraction for some time and ever since last summer she has been playing the Orpheum theaters. She is just completing complet-ing her tour and is scheduled to appear in New York the end of next month. Despite the troubles and dangers of sea traveling, there are still a considerable consid-erable number of vaudevillists who continue con-tinue to arrive at and depart from our shores. Last week Ruth Budd landed in San Francisco from Australia, where she has been appearing since her last Orpheum Or-pheum tour. Miss Budd is the betighted young woman who gaily sings and quips as he risks her life doing astonishing things on the trapeze. As soon as her Orpheum contracts are completed It is quite likely that she will return to the antipodes, as the Australians and New Zealanders acclaimed her one of the best a-rtists America has ever sent to them. If memory serves right, it was in the famous .English comedy, "Charley's Aunt," that it was first pointed out that Brazil was the place "where the nuts come from." Of course, a lot of nuts have been coming from there ever since, but in vaudeville, the word has taken on a different meaning. Therefore, when it is announced that Valyda and her Brazilian Bra-zilian Nuts have been booked for the Orpheum circuit, vaudeville patrons will prepare themselves for something that is funny and entertaining, for Valyda's Brazilian Bra-zilian Nuts are not edible. Two seasons ago Julie Ring, a star in her own right and not because of her famous sisters, toured the Orpheum circuit cir-cuit in one of John B. Hymer's swetches. "Twice a Week." Now she has a new offering, entitled "Divorced," .said to he a very witty satire, and she has again been engaged for an Orpheum tour. "She i will be assisted by James Nerval, who was her accomplice in fun on the last oc- I caslon. Ruth St. Denis, who is now appearing in the Orpheum theaters, will be kept exclusively in them until the summer, and thus the vaudeville-goers of the west will have the advantage over the two-a-day patrons of the cast. Since Miss SI. Denis started this tour she ha not been east of Chicago. Kxtensions of her contracts con-tracts were made last week. Elizabeth M. Murray, while playing at the Duluth Orpheum last week, offered "Uncle Sam's Red Cross Hustlers of Woodla nd." a patriotic organ ia I ion, a large silken ma rching flag. M iss Mur- ray's gift was made in honor of her own son. at present with the American fighting fight-ing forces. The club accepted the gill i through its president. j Hudler.
