Show COWARDS. Opposition to the conscription act has been productive of a riot of serious proportions pro-portions in Quebec, during the progress of which a number of persons have been injured and considerable property destroyed. de-stroyed. One of the most flagrant outrages out-rages committed by the mob was the wrecking of the Chronicle plant. owued by the gallant Sir David Watson, commander com-mander of the Fifth division of the Canadian expeditionary force now engaged en-gaged iu a life and death grapple vith the Huns. This is the second time the Chronicle plant has been wrecked, and the act shows plainly enough that not only are great numbers of the French Canadians afraid to fight for freedom, but that, like all cowards, they possess pos-sess an undying hatred for men like Watson, who are ready to sacrifice their lives iu order that liberty may survive in the world. We confess we do not understand these people. They are of French blood, but have been brought up under the British flag. One would naturally suppose sup-pose that with France and Great Britain Brit-ain fighting side by side in the great war the French Canadians would volunteer vol-unteer to a man. But they did not respond re-spond to the call for volunteers, and now they have become rebellious when the authorities of the Dominion are attempting at-tempting to arrest those who are trying to evade the draft act. What poor, pitiful poltroons they are! While the high-minded and patriotic young men of Canada are marching away to defend de-fend the very life and honor of the British empire aud to drive the invaders invad-ers from the soil of France, the French Canadians have become riotous and are attempting to secure immunity from conscription by destroying property and making murderous attacks upon the officers of-ficers of the law. There is but one, tiling for tiie Dominion Do-minion government to do. and that is to hang the leaders of the insurrection in (Quebec as a warning to others who are too cowardly to face death on the field of battle and are incline. to resist the draft. Let all such fellows be given their chauce between a felon's death and taking a chance in the war in the company of truly brave men. There have been no draft riots in the United States, and the men in class I are now responding to the second call. It is true that there are thousands of evaders evad-ers in the country, but they belong to the very dregs of society and aro traveling trav-eling about under assumed names. As quickly as they arc caught they are put into the urmy without the least ceremony. cere-mony. Hut there is no organized resistance re-sistance anywhere in the land, aud woe be unto any set of men who attempt to evade conscription by becoming riotous, riot-ous, assaulting officers aud destroying property. The people of the United States stand for a good many strike riots, but they will not allow cowards who hnve been drafted to escape their duty as citizens of the republic, and there is a growing disposition to find fault, with the government for issuing slacker commission, in order that men who are subject to the draft mnv get into- non-comliatant arms of the service. |
