Show GOOD WORK. A. Mitchell Palmer, alien property i cu'todian, has seized six German-owned German-owned woolen mills iu Xew Jersey, with a total valuation of more than $'70,000,0011. The Germans began operations op-erations in this branch of business in this country many rears ago, and hail reached a position where they played quite an important part, in the woolen! trade of the T'niled States. In fact, the-ie Germans formed an offensive and defensive alliance of flic German woolen interests in this country. Members Mem-bers of the organization purchased and conducted a daily newspaper, employed em-ployed R represeirtat i e to look out. for' their interests in Washington and to keep in clne touch with the attitude of the public sent iuient in all parts of the1 count rv. In the building up of I he in-iii.trv, they brought ti er German machinery and employe. German labor almo-t ev-rluwlv. ev-rluwlv. in all intents and purpose, t here n:, a lit t le pal eli nf t he hi I her i land in ,ec, .ler-e, and lilthouedi thci onner"' of the e mills hit'1 sidle to in ' fluence American politics and secure millions of dollars in profits, the organization or-ganization was German all the way through aud there was nothing American Ameri-can about it. Iu the early days of the war it is said that two of these German-owned mills attempted to buy up much of the wool in this country, iu order to handicap the United States as much as possible in the making of uniforms for our soldiers aud sailors, but early exposure prevented the success suc-cess of the conspiracy. If the full truth ever comes out regarding re-garding the influence of the Germans upon the political and business life of j the United States, we shall, no doubt, i I be very much astonished. We have the consolation of knowing, however, that when the war ends and a new start is made, the Germans will not be drawing : wealth from this country, and if they t I have any iufjucuee upon our politics j I it will be because some of the poli- i tieiaus are both treacherot and trai- torous. Germany has been playing j high stakes all over the world, but she j cannot win, even with loaded dice. ; Directors having been appointed to conduct the future operations of these German-owned mills in Xew Jersey, the profits of the business will go into the federal treasury and be used in the i purchase of Liberty bonds, and if the Germans who held tho stock in the compauies ever get anything more out of the business they will bl fortunate, indeed. Let the good work go on. |
