By WILLIAM ESSICK, Manager Vernon Club. j 7 01" must remember that Vernon JL finished a bad sixth in 1917. A number of my players did not report until late on account of being holdouts. hold-outs. Vaughn, who had probably the best record of any of the old bunch, refused to play. Of course, the club I have now hardly will be the nine which will eventually represent Vernon this vear. I am on tbo lookout for three or four plavers that wiil make the team look a who"le lot better in a few weeks. I think at present I have the best pitching pitch-ing staff m the league. When I get j my now men and they get in condition j I think I will have a team that will finish in tho first division. I Mv liue-up for tho opening game will" be Chadbourne. center field; Mitchell, short stop; Mathes or Gloieh-mann. Gloieh-mann. first base: Daley, left field; Long, right field: Westerzell, third lase, Pevonuer. catcher; iloep, second base; Quiun. pitcher. Two of my men. Devormer and Long, have shown up in great shape ami are hitting the ball hard. I think they will both prove to be mighty good men. ! By WILLIAM RODGERS, I Manager Sacranientp Club. QACRA31E.NTO has gone baseball mad. We are getting great crowds out at the exhibition games and tho boys are howlng the fans some fighting, peppcry baseball. So the whole plae is enthusiastic enthusi-astic over tlie coming season. Sacramento Sacra-mento will prove a great baseball town don't worry about that. . We have a good ball club, too. We heed a couple more pitchers and then we will bo In the fight for fair. I tried hard to get Jack Ryan, and offered a good prico for him. but Cncie Sam beat me to the bargain. Of the pitchers, Kay Bromley is going great guns and should be a steady winner win-ner for us. Lynn Brenton is also due for a great season with us. Ted Easterly Is catihing better ball than Ray Schalk right now. 1 never saw anything like it. Somo folks thought it was a big joke when I signed him, but you should see him go. And this fellow I'lnelii ought to be one of the real stars of the league. Denny Wilie. always ;i .:ri'l hitter, has show u his usual punch in pno'iiot1. We are not going to have any morning practice. v"0 the bo s can be on their toes for tho afternoon game. And when thev play a game, they have cot to hustlp. If thoy don't, I am through with thorn. Hustling wins the ball games and it is I wi'.at Uie fans want. We il give it to 'em. By WALTER H. M'CREDIE, Manager Salt Lake Club. BEFORE the unfortunate accident which deprived the Salt Lake club of the services of Pitchers Penncr and Dubuc, we bad a better baseball club than Portland ever had to start a season. Now that these two pitchers, in whom we placed so much hope, have been eliminated for possibly six weeks, it is up to us to fight all the harder. Tho loss of Penncr and Dubuc, while a severe blow at this time, by no means puts ns out of the pennant race. I should not like the people of Salt Lake to get tho impression that we are "done" before we start. Admittedly, the handicap under which we start is serious, but it is not fatal. If we get Collamore and Gould within a few weeks we will be pretty well fixed to slide along until Penncr and Dubuc get back into tho game, and when they do we wiil have six good pitchers, which is more than Salt Lake over had at one time and certainly more than Portland ever had. There is no question about the hitting strength of our outfield, nor the defensive strength of our inticld. Lven if we don't get an experienced third baseman, I predict that when this young fellow. Cox, has played the position in thirty games there won't be a chance to get him out of the berth. We need say nothing about Sheely, Sit:lin or Orr in the infield or Kyan and Farmer in the outfield. The fans of Salt Lake are familiar with their ability. Cbappclle is living up to his reputation as a hitter and unquestionably he will hit when the season opens. Smith and Feuerborn are grand voting ball playeri and we must continue to hang onto them somehow. 1 have not seen the catcher? in anything but practice games, so I cannot make any predictions lor them. f can say, however, that they have been showing up as well as we expected them to. Ward Miller appears to be a great bail player, although he has not yet had time to get into the best of condition. Taken altogether. I think Salt Lake will have a pennant contender. Even if our pitching is far below standard for five or six weeks, it is always to be remembered that the Coast league runs seven months. By CHARLES H.
