With the opening day of the Coast league baseball season' almost at hand, critics here of the game assert Salt Lake in the better shape than the Angels for the call to play ball at Washington park Tuesdav at' 2:H0 o'clock. The Angels, it is held, had one of the best Coast league teams ever lined up until a draft beard yesterday yanked Kenworthv out of Powers 's lineup and toid him to go back to San Francisco and build ships or be prepared to go to the trenches. Xt cannot be denied the action regarding regard-ing the star Angel second baseman is a hard blow to Manager Killefer's plans, but he today is taking consolation in the- fact that he has been promised a strong infielder from the Cubs. In addition, ad-dition, Powers expects to get a player from another major league organization. The Angels had a hard workout at Washington park today and the center rif interet on the diamond was Sam Crawford, who demonstrated with his stick ho' it happened that for seasons sea-sons he held the spotlight in the Ameri'-an league. Crawford is in perfect per-fect condition, due in part to golf and many winter bail games. Powers is rather modest in making claims for what his club is going to do this season, instead he is devoting a good deal of time to sending out inquiries inquir-ies for players. Today he sent many telegrams east. His fondest hope is he , will get a real infielder by Tuesday. The usual baseball parade will be held Tuesday. It will start from the park shortly after noon and the placers on both the Salt L: ke and the Los 'Angeles 'An-geles teams will take part. On account of the promised presence at the opening open-ing game of Ma jor-General stnjn com- I maiider at ( amp Kearny, with members j of his staff, as well as I ominand'T j Brother-ton of the San Dir-L"j naval training station, the parade will haye a military air, with two bands, one from j Camp Kearny and one from San Piego. 1 At Wa-hington park the bands v ill give a concert before the game. The j park will be decked in the flags of all the allies. Karl Crandall, brother of i the Angel pitcher and who belongs to! Salt Lake, will be here Tuesday to con- j tor with Mcl'redie. Karl wants more money or he will continue to drill for California oil. There is sure to be a big crowd out. opening dav, judging from the advance -ale of revrve.l seats and boxes. Powers today received a wire fromi Outfielder Cooper, at Fort. Worth, saying say-ing he was on his way. Wilson, at third, is expeete, to lie a temporary arrangement. It is expected tee po-it'ion will re- fillc, by M.-I'abe, from the Cobs. It is said here tonicht that llarl Maggert has p!a"o! ,iH last Came. His knee, it is reported, has been permanently injured. There will be several features on opening day, any one of which is expected ex-pected to draw a crowd. Included are Sam Crawford, Killefer's find; Pertica, General Strong, the idolized commander of the Fortieth guard division of the army; the Bees, as to what sort of troops they are using this season, and what sort 'of ball machine Powers and his manager has been able to assemble since last fail. |
