ARRESTED IN LAREDO Among Attaches of Consulates Consul-ates Under Ban of President's Presi-dent's War Measure. Karl Kophken and Alfred Baker, German Ger-man prisoners, of war, caught at Laredo, Tex., recently while attempting to make their way across tho international bridge into Mexico, are due to arrive in Salt Lake today for internment in the Third war prison camp at Fort Douglas. Those alien enemies are two of the six prisoners whose early arrival at tho local prison camp was forecast in yesterday morning's Tribune. Three more are to come from points in Texas and one Is due from Fort Riley, Kan. According to Information received here, last night there are nine more Germans held in custody by the military authorities authori-ties at Laredo awaiting action on their cases by the federal government, and it is expected that these will also be ordered or-dered sent to Fort Douglas ror internment intern-ment for the period of the war. Kophken and Baker, it is reported, are two of a number of former German consulate con-sulate attaches picked up by the federal military authorities along the Texas-Mexican border recently in compliance with orders from the president of tlie UnUod Stales directing that all former consuls and attaches of German consulates tn the United States who are in the country either leave at once for Germany or be arrested and interned in war prison camps for tho period of the war. Will Arrive Today. The two men who are due to arrive in Pilt Lake today were caught In the act of attempting to steal across the international inter-national bridge at Laredo into Mexican territory and thev are said to be suspected sus-pected of being Interested in plots of the German government to arouse Mexican hostilities toward the United States, some of the details of which were laid hare some time ago through the discovery discov-ery of important papers in the nanas of German government representatives In this country. After severance of relations between the United States and Germany some of the German consulate attaches were permitted per-mitted to remain in this country, but recently re-cently when it developed that Berlin had received advance information relative to the sailing of federal troops from this country to France, with the result that the transports were compelled to fight their way, by means of their naval convoy, con-voy, through a network of German submarines, sub-marines, the president ordered that all these consulate attaches be gathered in and interned in prison camps. Many Are Arrested. The military and federal authorities got busy on the Mexican border at once, with enemies were taken into custody. Eleven of these were, picked up in Laredo and three others were caught in other towns along the border. These three and tho two now en route to the prison hero were ordered here immediately, but action has not ben taken in the cases of the others as yet. The prisoner due from Fort Riley is said to be a former German consulate attache also. He is due to arrive today or tomorrow and the others from Texas are expected within the next few days. The two who arrive today were In Denver between trains yesterday afternoon after-noon and attracted considerable attention at the Union station there, according to reports from the Colorado capital. The two prisoners are under a guard of soldiers sol-diers composed of one sergeant and two enlisted men. |
