The sinking of fourteen British merchantmen of more than 1600 tons is reported in the weekly summary ii shipping losses isseud today. Three merchantmen of less than 1600 tons and seven fishing vessels also were sunk. The official statement follows: Arrivals, 2S!ii- sailings, 1:798. British merchant ships sunk by mine or submarine, over 1C0O tons, including one previously fourteen ; under 1600 tons, three. British merchant ships unsuccessfully unsuccess-fully attacked; including lour previously, previ-ously, seventeen. British fishing vessels sunk. Including In-cluding one previously, seven. With one exception tlie number of merchantmen sunk last week is the lowest low-est of any week since the British inaugurated inau-gurated in March the system of giving out weekly repoi ts. The report of .Mure h U showed seventeen merchantmen' sunk. The same total is shown in the last week's summary. The preceding report gave the sinking of fifteen vessels of KiOu tons and five tinder that size. In the two earlier periods the totals were, respectively, 2S and .32. This compares with the sinking of forty large merchantmen in one week and thirty-eight in another at the height of the campaign In April. In the week ended April 21 fifty-five vessels in all were sunk. |
