Show RUSSIAN SUCCESS. Tf the Russians do no more this season sea-son they have already done nobly. They have struck a blow which has absolutely dazed their presumptuous and braggart foes. They have shown that if they remain re-main in the war the Teutonic power cannot win. T h ey h a v e sh o w n the genuine- spirit of the Russian people, a spirit winch was not authentically expressed ex-pressed in revolutionary and kaleidoscopic kaleido-scopic Petrograd. AY'heu Kerensky and other leaders appealed ap-pealed to the good faith, the honor, the love of country and the straightforward common sense of the Russian people they could not appeal in vain. The Russians havo two salient characteristics which make them great. They have a mental lucidity equal to' that of the French, and they are dynamic. They soe clearly and they strike hard. 1 The success of General Korniloff in breaking tho Austro-German line and in capturing the key . to Lemberg, Halicz, is an illustration of Russian striking power. There never has been a time since the summer of 1914 that the Russians, Rus-sians, possessing adequate supplies and ammunition, have not been able to defeat de-feat the Austrians. In conflicts with the Germans, when treachery was not present and supplies were equal, the Slavs often have been the victors. General Scott was speaking his convictions con-victions when he said that there was ever' indication that the Russian offensive offen-sive would be continued victoriously. The Russians have one less enemy to fight than formerly treason. Last ear General Brussiloff accomplished much, but he never could be sure that his generals gen-erals werei not in league with the foe. It has been said on what appears to be sound authority that the German offensive of-fensive in Rumania stopped last year on a line agreed to in advance with Russian generals, who, 'it is to be assumed, as-sumed, were acting in conformity .with the wishes of the pro-German cabal at Petrograd. All that kind of treachery has been eliminated, and if General Korniloff is held up in his advance it will be by bullets and not by treacherous treacher-ous compacts. The Teutons must fight it out with war weapons only. So far they have not been able to check the Russian giant with these weapons, and they have been forced back upon the last defense lines guarding Lemberg. |
