Deposits totalling Jl'V'oO .have been drawn down by the depositors Hlnce the ordinance was enacted, but the $17,i;niJ remains on deposit with the city. Cum iru:-sioncr Newman is not disposed to believe be-lieve that ;-:alt Lake has 11 uu property owners who a. re indifferent to the tact that they havu but to ask In the proper ma nner for $1 u each in order to gt It. He Is disposed to believe that many are unaware of the fact that the meter deposits de-posits are no longer demanded and that die old deposits are subject to refund. To make sure that no misunderstanding may prevail with regard to the matter, Commissioner Newman has determined to nave each person having a credit witli the city for a meter deposit notified that t he money a waits him upon application. The depositor must appear at the office of I he waterworks commissioner with his deposit receipt, if he would have his money back. There he, will obtain an order or-der on the city treasurer for the amount of the receipt. "This money is not available to the waterworks wa-terworks department or any other department depart-ment of the city," said Commissioner Newman. "The city is not in the banking bank-ing business. The credit to the meter users on the city's books no longer has any significance, and we want them to come and get their money. We are not only ready to turn the money over on compliance with requirements but are determined de-termined that' it must be turned back-to back-to the depositors. The ordinance was passed with that intent and must be put Into effect.' Asked what would be done if any depositor de-positor refused to take the money. Commissioner Com-missioner Newman answered that a problem prob-lem of that sort would be dealt with when encountered, if encountered. "I am convinced that many depositors are ignorant ig-norant of the fact that their meter deposits de-posits are reclaimable under the law," said .Mr. Newman. "The information that an ordinance was enacted, requiring that the deposits be refunded, has failed to reach them or thev have forgotten to make application. We propose to see to it that every person having a deposit tor a meter with the city shall be specifically spe-cifically informed that It Is awaiting his application for refunding. Ho is entitled to that information as well as to the money, for without the information he Is deprived of tho advantages of the refunding refund-ing provision of the ordinance." |
