Show Wiolfif . UH COMPETITION Hint of Government Purposes Pur-poses Revealed in Visit of Agent to Utah. CONSERVATION PLAN I j Elimination of Unwarranted Unwarrant-ed Duplications in Industry Indus-try Desired. That the federal government Is talcing J steps to eliminate unwarranted und useless use-less competition In the industrial life of tho country at the same time it Is endeavoring en-deavoring to increase the food supply and conserve the labor resources is indicated in-dicated In a suggestion made to Jesse Knight and others interested in the new sugar factory at Springville. The suggestion made to Mr. Knight was to the effect that inasmuch as the factories already established at Pay son, Spanish Fork and Lehi were ample to care for the sugar beet production of that territory, tlie new factory probably would not only find difficulty in obtaining obtain-ing a sufficient supply of beets, but that it would also hamper the operations of the other plants. The suggestion was conveyed ' to Mr. Knight about a month ago by a man who asserted that he was a representative of the federal government. Mr. Knight explained ex-plained that it was not the intention of the new concern to interfere In any way with the operations of the already established es-tablished plants in Utah county, but to develop new territory. Having heard nothing further In regard to the elimination elimina-tion of the new faciory, work on he plant has been continued. Federal Agent Calls. About the time of the visit of the stranger to Mr. Knight a man who said he was a representative of the federal government called upon the officers of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company and explained ex-plained that he was making a survey of the sugar resources of the intermountain country. Neither Mr. Knight nor the officials of-ficials of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company were able last night to recall the r.ame of the visitor, although all declared that he represented himself as an agent of the United States department of agriculture agri-culture from Washington, D. C. The federal representative explained to the Utah-Idaho officials that it was not the intention of the government to hamper ham-per in any way the industries which tended to increase the food production, especially the production of sugar. The idea was, he said, to discourage the erection erec-tion of new industries where they would cause harmful conflict, where the resources re-sources were not sufficient to care for all -the industries, and which would tend to cripple the labor resources. Ready to Co-operate. The visitor asserted that the department depart-ment of agriculture would gladly co-operate with any company in the development develop-ment of new territory and the establishment establish-ment of new plants. He said that if any such concerns were desirous of extending extend-ing their activities the department would be glad to suggest locations for new plants and furnish data concerning the proposed locations. The visitor remained in this territory several days and then left, presumably to make surveys of other districts. While nothing has been heard from him by the Utah sugar operators since hiB departure, the local sugar producers are inclined to believe that the federal government has inaugurated a movement to organize the Industries and" food production of the country. |
