Show TH BE lit ME OTTAWA, July 11. Arbitrary charges for "stumpage" of ?2 a cord were recently recent-ly placed on the books of news print paper pa-per manufacturers as a factor in the cost of ground wood, according to testimony today of P. B. Wilson of the Spanish River Fulp & Paper company, at the continued con-tinued inquiry here by Commissioner R. A. Pingle into manufacturing costs of news print. This fact was disclosed when the commissioner pointed out to the witness the wide discrepancy in the figures of the United States federal trade commission and figures supplied by Ca.i nadian manufacturers. Mr. Wilson said this difference was due to tlie fact that the commission had not considered "stumpage" . charges, which made a difference in price of ground wood of $2.fi0 a ton. The witness said last year 5600 tons of ground wood hod been sold in the United States at $22.37 a ton. which cost $15. 81. Sulphite that cost his firm $41.77 to make had been sold in the United States at $66.28 a ton. |
