Show TWELVE HEW ROOKIES II l!i CAMP' More Than Fifty Recruits Now Showing Their Faces at Officers' School. Officer '"rookies" who .ire drilling daily at the armory on Piorr ont street were given rifles yesterday afternoon for the first time, and for half an hour devoted their attention to bringing the weapons to rest on the armory floor without getting get-ting their feet between the floor and the rifle butts. Under direction of Captain ' Santschi and his virll'. sergeants the men wero given rudimentary instruction in handling arms. A dozen more recruits joined tlte ranks of the "rookies" yesterday, making more than fifty that are now taking ,the daily di ill under Captain Santschi. Rapid progress is being ma tie, as the captain and drill fereants waste no time in advancing ad-vancing their pupils, some of whom have had drill at one time or another, while for many the experiences are entirely en-tirely new. More of the army setting up exercises exer-cises were gone through yesterday, to the almost disastrous d iscomiort of the larger waistlines among the recruits. However, all of the men seem to be .-." thoroughly enjoying the training, and agree that when the six weeks' course is ended they will be in far better physical condition than when it started, whether t hey are admitted to the training camp at the Presidio or not. Applications for the training camp are still being received by the local commit- tee, of which C. S. Burton is chairman. Saturday will he the last day for filing applications, and after that date the local committee will file its recommendations with Captain Louis R. 1M!1, who will then personally examine Those recommended recom-mended and make his choice of the sixty-eight sixty-eight who will be sent to the camp as the quota from this state. |
