Show STElSf Kill SUIjnOfiPEDO Four Members of American Vessel's Crew Are Supposed Sup-posed to Be Lost. NEW YORK, July 11. The American steamship Kansan. carrying a crew of fifty men, has been sunk, presumably off the French roast, according to a cablegram cable-gram received today by the France and Canada Steamship company, which chartered char-tered the vessel. The fate of those on board Is not known. The Kansan. owned by the American- Hawaiian i-teamshlp company, e truck a mine off the French coast last December, Decem-ber, She was then reported as sunk, but wan salvaged and returned to New York. In October, 1916. the Kanaan was held np by German submarine L-f3 off Nantucket, but was allowed to proceed after the cup tain learn ed her identity. Si:e was af 7013 tons groats. The vessel was valued at ?3. 000.000. She carried a cargo of flour and other foodstuffs, together with 4000 tons of steel, which, valued at J2.000.000, was consigned to the French government. A majority of her crew were Americans. The cablegram did not say whether the steamer was torpedoed or where the sinking took place. The vessel left New York on June 2S, commanded by Captain F. E. Forsythe. WASHINGTON, July 11. -State department de-partment dispatches late today announcing announc-ing the destruction of the American steamer Kansan by a German submarine said that four members of the crew were missing but that all the American armed guard was safe. |
