Show PARDON REFUSED. Contrary to general expectations President Wilson has declined to pardon F. Drew Caminetti, convicted of violating vio-lating the Mann white slave law, and the young man who eloped with a high school girl to Reno will be compelled to pay for his folly by serving out his sentence sen-tence in a federal prison. Maury 1. Diggs will also "do his bit" behind prison walls, although he has married his partner in the Reno escapade since his wife divorced him. Caminetti 's father is commissioner general of immigration immi-gration and has made every possible effort ef-fort to save his son from the disgrace of wearing a felon's stripes, and both he and the mother of the young man are worthy of the sympathy of all other fathers and mothers. No doubt the president's heart bled for them when he refused to issue a pardon, but he could not do otherwise under the circumstances, circum-stances, for the offense committeed is no longer a conventional crime, and under un-der the decision of the highest court in the land the question of commercialized vice is not to be considered when violations vio-lations of the Mann act occur and the offenders are brought to trial. The determination de-termination of the president to "do his duty though the heavens fall" will be generally commended throughout the country.' been among tho prison wardens that he was made their chief and became president of the American Prison congress. con-gress. His experience, his intellignce and his judgment always carried great : weight with them, as well as with the people of his own state. He has served us well for many years and we should j be recreant in our duty and callously j without gratitude if we permitted him to retire without at least giving testimony testi-mony to his worth as a citizen and as an administrator. Whatever of position and honor the future may confer- upon him he cannot possibly win a higher place in the confidence con-fidence and respect of his own people of Utah. Mr. Storrs, his successor, is a man of the highest repute and ability, and doubtless will serve the state with demotion de-motion and skill. |
