Show Flucride riot Essential Dear Editor: The Utah State Board of Health's statement (dated June 10, 1976) to substantiate the proposed fluoridation regulations stated that "Adjustments "Ad-justments of fluoride levels is undertaken to provide the necessary amount of an essential essen-tial nutrient." THAT FLUORIDE is an essential es-sential nutrient has never been confirmed by any scientific research. A National Academy of Sciences book (Biologic Effects Ef-fects of Atmospheric Pollutants: Pollu-tants: Fluorides, 1971) which is often cited by the American . Dental Assoc. pro-fluoridation booklet devoted an entire chapter to the subject, "Is fluorine an essential element?" AFTER DESCRIBING the generally accepted scientific criteria that determine the essentiality es-sentiality of any element, the scientific literature was reviewed. None provided an evidence that fluoride was essential es-sential or performs any vital function. . This pro-fluoridation publication did add at the end of this tabulation of scientific evidence that "it cannot be definitely concluded from these experiments that fluoride is nonessential for the nutrition of these species." (emphasis added) , YES, IT IS indeed difficult to accept even scientific evidence that proves in its entirety en-tirety the opposite of what one wants to believe or promote. The public statement by the Utah State Board of Health also al-so claimed that "In 1969, the National Research Council declared fluoride to be an essential es-sential dietary ingredient." IMPRINTED ON the bottom of the official stationary of the National Research Council is the following statement: "National "Na-tional Research Council is an operating agency of the National Na-tional Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering to serve government govern-ment and other organizations." organiza-tions." Isn't it curious that this group declared fluoride to be an essential dietary ingredient two years before an official publication of its parent organization or-ganization admitted that scientific research has provided provid-ed no such evidence? (see above) THE IMPRINT ON the official of-ficial stationary provides at least part of the answer- the National Research Council does that which it is assigned andpaidtodo. One may ask, "By what authority did the National Research Council make this declaration?" The National Research Council has equal authority to fire President Ford and install Edward Kennedy. Ken-nedy. In other words, absolutely absolu-tely none. i WOULD greatly appreciate it if the Utah State Board of Health would cease use of such false propaganda and admit to the peopleof Utah that fluoride has certainly not been proven to be an "essentia) "essen-tia) element". Fluoride is damaging to human health at the recommended recom-mended levels. Lowell D. White, Ph.D. Environmental Health Scientist 12941 South 1830 West Riverton, Utah 84065 |
