Show 7D77StoSS )GS)S off The 1976 Christmas Seal I Campaign Goal of $100,000 i was announced today by Mrs. i LaVem W. Parmley, presi- dent of the Utah Lung Association, Asso-ciation, as the Utah organization organi-zation launched its 60th anniversary Christmas Seal mailing. "IT HAS BEEN 70 years i since the first Christmas Seal . ! was sold in the United States. " j to help fight tuberculosis,'';-; she said "and 60 years since ; the association came to I Utah." i More than 262,000 Christ- mas Seal letters will be i delivered to Utahns during the months of October and November, carrying the message mes-sage "Christmas Seals Fight Lung Disease", Mrs. Parmley said. CHRISTMAS Seals, she pointed out, have always fought lung disease, from TB in 1907 to emphysema, asthma asth-ma and infant rung disease today. Mrs. Parmley noted that more than 15 million Americans suffer from various chronic lung diseases, emphysema being the most prevalent. Recent evidence, she said, indicates that in the Salt Lake Valley ' alone, there are more than 4,000 people who suffer from chronic lung disease. "I THINK," she said, "people have become extremely aware of where and how their money is spent these days. I think everyone who gives to Christmas Seals should know that 90 cents of every dollar is spent here in Utah. The other ten cents is sent to the American Lung Association As-sociation for lung disease research and formulation of national programs to help fight lung disease." THIS YEAR'S Christmas Seal money, she explained, will be used to bring more respiratory disease self-care classes for chronic lung disease patients to several locations throughout the state as well as continued smoking and health education programs and patient consultation consul-tation services for people who have tuberculosis and lung disease. The lung association, she explained, will also begin a study to examine the facilities and services throughout the state for the care of chronic obstructive lung disease patients pa-tients (COPD). I "WE WANT TO help insure that all Utahns get into the system for the care of respiratory res-piratory problems and get the proper care and treatment," she said. "Many people think TB is a disease of the past, but it still exists in Utah and we still fight it," Mrs. Parmley emphasized. "We will be monitoring the state TB program as it undergoes a new phase, since the closing of the TB unit in Ogden." "AND OF course, we have only begun the fight in areas such as pediatric lung disease, childhood asthma and air pollution. It really is a matter of life and breath," she said. |
