Show 1W PLAN ADOPTED All Messages Between Salt Lake and Ogden to Be Sent by Phone-in Phone-in line with a plan that is being put into effect throughout the country, the Western Union Telegraph company will within the next two weeks abandon the ubo of telegraphers so far as Salt Lake and Ogden messages are concerned, con-cerned, a telephone system to be used instead of the Morse code. . According to representatives of the company, the use of the telephone is made necessary wherever possible because of the shortage short-age of telegraph operators, who are being be-ing called to the larger central offices of the company. , In place of two telegraph operators at the iSalt Lake office, five young women wo-men will be used to transmit all messages mes-sages by telephone and a force of approximately ap-proximately the same size will be established es-tablished at the Og'ien office. With the exception of the wire chief and his assistants, there will be no telegraphers employed in the company's Ogden office of-fice after the telephone system is in complete operation. Heretofore two regular operators have been employed in two shifts, ' the wire chief taking the third shift as aa operator. Under the new plan the wire chief or his assistant as-sistant will continue to handle the one shift by telephone. Although every telephone line, transcontinental trans-continental and otherwise, east and west, passes through the Western Union repeater station at Ogden, every message in or out of Ogden goes through the Salt Lake distributing office. of-fice. For this reason it is possible i to dispense entirely with the use of i telegraph operators at Ogden. The re-! re-! peating of messages on the transcontinental transcon-tinental lines is performed bv the use, ! of automatic repeaters, which require! I only an overseer. The wire chief is ; I held responsible for the condition of all j I lines in this district. As a repeater j ! station in the Western Union system, j Ogden is second only to Pittsburg, Pa. ! Special equipment for the transmis-i transmis-i sion of messages by telephone between Ogden and &alt Lake has already been j installed ami is being tested daily. |
