Show FORMER ATTACHE IS SUBJECTED TO MUCH ANNOYANCE BERNE, via Paris, Feb. 14. Christian N. Herter, formerly an attache of the American embassy in Berlin, but who was loaned by Ambassador Gerard to Brand WhitlofAk. ' the American minister to Belgium, arrived in Berne today, after having been arrested by German petty officials at Mayenee and having been subjected sub-jected to much other annoyance in leaving leav-ing Belgium. Mr. Herter said today that he had applied ap-plied for his passports P'ebruary 5, but was kept waiting for them until February Febru-ary 9. When he had to change trains at Mayence he was seized and locked up tor most of the night. When he was released, re-leased, after repeated protests, he was ordered to cross tho boundary by S o'clock. This, he said, he did, with the customary difficulties at the frontier. |
