Show LANSING WARNING AROUSES MARTIAL SPIRIT AT HAVANA HAVANA, Feb. 14. Important events have been following each other rapidly during the past twenty-four hours. Aside from Orlente, and possibly a part of Camaguey, no evidence exists that any persons except armed guerrillas are operating op-erating in the four other provinces of the island. The note of Secretary Lansing, delivered deliv-ered by V. E. Gonzales, the American minister, has had a splendid effect in government circles. Martial spirit is being aroused by the formation of a presidential guard among society men here. Catalino C'ollazo is equipping a guerrilla band of 150 men to join the regular army and protect lives and property in the outskirtp of the Marlanao district. Acosta Guerra and other revolutionists have taken refuge in the Pinar del KK hills. Another band of revolutionists has been broken up near Guana jay. The yacht Julito. owned' hv former President Gomez, lias been abandoned. The government tonight claimed a victory vic-tory in the elections he'd today at Las Villas by a great majority. Everything is said to be orderly there. Official Statement. The following statement was issued at the palace tonight: Interest has centered today on the bye-election held in Santa Clara province, prov-ince, which, from reports, eouid not have been moie peaceful. Advance information indicates a decisive victory vic-tory for tiie Conservative party, the members of which flocked in grea t numbers and with the utmost enthu- . siasm to the polls. The Liberal leaders lead-ers were disappointed in their expectations expec-tations of a substantial vote from their followers, many of whom, it is said, marked their ballots in favor of the candidates of the opposing party, thus registering their disapproval of the ill-considered ill-considered seditious movement in progress. Yesterday the Liberals, through duly accredited representatives, appeared ap-peared before the central board of elections in Havana, seeking to have the elections of.today suspended because be-cause of the reported uprising. The board turned down the petition. Outlaws Defeated. Official' reports from Major Iglesias, Captains LaMadrid, Hernandez and Jiminez and Lieutenant Fundora, all operating in Santa Clara, show that several bands of the outlaws were defeated de-feated and dispersed during the night with losses of twelve men killed anJ three made prisoner. This brings the total losses of the insurgents since Sunday up to forty-eight men killed and six made prisoner. A great many horses and much equipment have been taken. The band led by TPino Guerre. Baldomero Acosta and Guas, referred to yesterday, Is trying hard to reach the foothills of the range of mountains moun-tains extending from Cabinas to Guane, Pinar del Rio province, but they are being so closely pursued by the army that It seems impossible they can escape. Absolute quiet prevails in Havana and Matanzas, while from Camaguey there come nothing but rumors, due to the fact that communication with that province has not yet been reestablished. re-established. . j |
