The American schooner Lyman Law was sunk by a submarine on Monday, according to a dispatch from the Stefani agency of Rome. The crew, including eight Americans, Ameri-cans, is reported to have been landed. Tbs Lyman M. Law, 300 tons gross and 211 feet long, was built in 1S90 at West Haven, Conn. She was formerly owned by the Benedict-Manson Marine company of New Haven, Conn., which sold her a year ago to New York Interests Inter-ests represented by the Maritime Transportation Trans-portation company. NEWS OF DISASTER IS SENT BY CONSUL TREADWAY AT ROME "WASHINGTON", Feb. , 14. Consul Tread way. at Rome, cabled a report today to-day indicating that the American schooner schoon-er Lynian M. Law was not torpedoed, but ! was destroyed by a bomb placed on board I by a submarine. I Secretary Lansing had another report which said the ship was sunk by gun-j gun-j fire from a submarine. I Consul Treadway's report said the sub-! sub-! marine was Austrian, but flew no flag. ! Consul Treadway forwarded three dis-! dis-! patches, two of which he had received 'from the Italian minister of marine and one from the British consul at Cagliarl. The latter said that Captain McDonough 'and nine men comprising the crew of the American sailing vessel Lyman M. Law of New York had landed at Cagliarl. According Ac-cording to the minister of marine's an- nouncenient. the vessel was sunk by an Austrian submarine without a flag. A paraphrase of the minister of marine's ma-rine's dispatches, transmitted under Treadway's signature, follows: "Received telegram from Malta. American Ameri-can four-masted sailing vessel Lyman M. I jaw in flames, latitude north 38 degrees VI minutes, longitude east Greenwich 7 degrees 5S minutes. No trace of crew." ! The second message, dated Cagliarl, !
