Show ' SPEAKER AS PROPHET. Champ Clark has gone upon record as saying there will be no war between the United States and Germany and no extra session of congress this summer, for all of which the good Lord make us truly thankful if it turns out that the speaker of the house knew what he was talking :)iout when he made his prediction. predic-tion. While a great majority of the people peo-ple of the United States approved the course of the president in severing relations re-lations with Germany very few if any of them want war for war's sake. It can also be set down as a fact that the feeling against congress holding an extra ex-tra session during the coming spring, summer or fall is practically unanimous. But the two things will go together this year. If we have war an extra session of congress will be unavoidable, but unless un-less we come to blows with the central powers there ara no good reasons why the senators and representatives should remain in Washington for the purpose of passing unnecessary laws and otherwise other-wise harassing the business interests of the country. Champ Clark's opportunities opportun-ities for getting "inside dope," are the very best and we are inclined to place some reliarice in his forecast up to the present moment. But the situation may change in the twinkling of an eye. |
