Show for Good Roads. The last Legislature appropriated $1,000 to be used on the roads In this county between Wellsvllle in tho south and Richmond In the north, pio-vided pio-vided that the Cache county commissioners commis-sioners appropriate an equal amount for thesamo purpose, making $:(,000 In all. The question may bo asked, or the proposition considered, as to the best way of spending this money. Considering Con-sidering the extensive amount of road building that must be done In this county s6oner or later, would It not be w isc right now, to lay a foundation for road building that would boot some permanency, having in view other toads than the one from 'Wcllsvillo to lllchinond. Theie Is a county road iom Logan to Hcnson, Newton and Claikston In tho west, twenty miles; fiom the boundaiy lino in the north by Kiankiln, to Wcllsvillo In the south Is about tvv cut y-so von miles, making a total of fortj'-scvennillesoi' road that needs giavel hauled upon It, with the possible exception of six or seven miles on which some w oik has been done. On these two thoroughfares, one tunning nut tli and south and the other east and west tluough the valley, there Is at least foity miles of toad to build, not mentioning other roads that need attention. How long will It take to build up these loads by hauling gravel in wagons? This question ot road building assumes a phase at the present pres-ent time that needs soi Ions consideration. consider-ation. The county is wealthy and populous and Is spreading out in com-ineicialentcrpilses com-ineicialentcrpilses which will be retarded re-tarded to some extent If our roads are not placed in a better condition. We llnd no fault as to what has been done but feel that tight now this question should be handled In a way that will be In keeping with the magnitude of the work belorc us. As before stated In these columns wo believe the county should piocuie, either by renting or buying, nartow guage engine, cars and ralls.and lay tcmpoiary tracks through this county from the different gravel beds thatcan bosecured. If, however, it should be considered by the county court that time is too short to adopt the above methods this year, In order to lepalr the roads between Wellsvllle and Richmond, negotiate with the railroad companv to haul gravel by the train load from a giavel bed the county coun-ty owns by the side of the railroad track south of Merrills' creameij'. Let a temporary track be laid up one of the Held roads near David C.uson's farm between Richmond and Smith-Held, Smith-Held, then have poll tax teams haul tho gravel where it Is needed, in the south, towards Wellsvllle, have a teni-poiaij teni-poiaij track laid fiom the sugar fact-orj fact-orj south, for a mile or two and then do the same as In the north. We believe be-lieve cither of these methods would bo approved by the people, if this money mon-ey Is consumed bj the giavel being hauled by teams it will not go very far and In the couisoof two or thiee jeais, It will haidly be seen whcio tho w oik has been done. These lines aie olleied as kind suggestions, having in view the best interests ot tho people. |
