Show Household Workers Now Eligible For Social Security Beginning Jan. 1 of this year, household and casual workers are covered by social security regardless re-gardless of the duration of their employment, if they are paid $50 or more in cash wages in a calendar cal-endar quarter. In making this announcement, Kesler T. Powell, manager of the district social security se-curity office in Provo, explained that the change is one of several sev-eral affecting new groups under un-der the Social Security Act amendments enacted by Congress last fall. Mr. Powell stated that household house-hold work, as defined in the law, is work done in a private home and not connected with the employer's em-ployer's trade or business. It includes in-cludes yard work, gardening, baby-sitting, and other duties performed in or about the private home. Casual work includes all other services not connected with a trade or business. Employers of household or casual cas-ual workers in 1955 will be re quired to make the usual social security tax deductions from wages wag-es and file quarterly returns with the district director of internal in-ternal revenue on all employees paid $30 or mure in cash wages in a calendar quarter. The first returns under the new regulations regula-tions are due in April. Pamphlets containing instruc tions for employers and employees employ-ees are available at the Provo office.
