Show WINDS HELP Little Fallout Recorded From Last Shot In less than an hour from the detonation of an above average atomic device denonation at Yucca Yuc-ca Flats, Nov., last Friday at 12:15 p. m. MST,.the mushroom cloud and the usual tail were visible In Cedar City. Within two hours after its detonation, de-tonation, the nuclear device Which was designed by Los Alamos Ala-mos Scientific Laboratory, the cloud had passed directly over the Escalante Desert area, in-cflu3'rng in-cflu3'rng the populated points of MaAenta. Enterprise, Beryl, Lund and Newcastle, as well as Cedar City, Enoch, Summit and Paro-wan Paro-wan In Iron County. However, AEC monitors in Cedar Ce-dar City reported that fallout from the cloud was relatively small and barely detectable in this area. In the vicinity of Lund and Beryl the amount of fallout recorded by the two-man team was slightly above that In Cedar City proper, which was estimated at about double normal background back-ground readings. One of the reasons for the small amount of fallout from the cloud which was probably the most visible and which passed more directly over this area than clouds from preceding tests, is the fact that the cloud was moving mov-ing at a high rate of speed and the winds were keeping the particles par-ticles of fallout Intact. Estimated speed of the portion of the cloud which passed over this area, as It left the test site, was 75 to 90 statute sta-tute miles an hour. 60 Associated Tests Friday's shot, which had approximately ap-proximately GO associated experiments, experi-ments, had been ready for firing since April 7. Complicating the maintenance of the test's readiness readi-ness during the eight-day period of recurring postponements was the need to offset rapid evaporation evapora-tion and keep sufficient water In a shallow artificial lake, 800 by I 3000 feet, constructed on top of Frenchman's Flat dry lake bed. In addition to the lake, two other surfaces of equal area were used for studies of blast effects, one being of asphalt and the other a smooth dry lake and desert des-ert surface. Thhe blast, a midday shot, was plainly visible In Cedar City and the surrounding area and the shock waves were heard here above the normal noises and activities ac-tivities of the city. |
