Show New Forage Meter Explained To. Cedar City Kiwanians The versatile use of a rather common looking "forage meter" was explained and partially demonstrated dem-onstrated at the regular meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Cedar City Monday evening by Max Robinson of the College of Southern South-ern Utah. Robinson In January explained the workings of his forage met er before a national range management man-agement group at San Jose, Calif and has received wide recognition recogni-tion for the development. It was explained by the C S U faculty member that many alterations alter-ations were still necessary; however, how-ever, fundamentally the meter is workable and affords a means of measuring forage in a slm- pie and fairly accurate method. Basis for the meter, he explained, is to measure, by sampling, the amount of electricity that can be stored by particular forage, a figure that varies fn proportion propor-tion to the amount of forage. Some of the contemplated uses of the forage meter Is to predetermine pre-determine the production of vari- i ous crops such as alfalfa andj grazing lands. It could also be i used to measure the amout of. forage that is eaten by live-1 stock by taking tests prior to the range land use and after. It affords af-fords a means of determining the amount of forage eaten by livestock live-stock on pasture and grazing lands. There is such a , wide spread in forage, Robinson said, and all must be measured. Some pastures pas-tures will feed three animals per acre while other grazing areas take 100 acres to starve one animal ani-mal to death. Two new members were welcomed wel-comed into the club Monday evening. They were Rulon Woodbury, Wood-bury, instructor in the Cedar City Junior High School, and Keith Norris, who is working with the Bureau of Land Management Man-agement office in Cedar City. Monday evening, April 25, the program will consist of motion pictures entitled "Basketball Hi-lites Hi-lites o 1954" featuring excerpts from the University of Utah team and their games of the past season. |
