Show Retail Merchants Cautions Buyers Against Unscrupulous Salesmen A warning for all residents to investigate before they buy anything any-thing from door-to-door salesmen was issued today by the Retail Mcrchrnts Committee of the Cedar Ce-dar City Chamber of Commerce. As part of the chamber's current cur-rent campaign to warn residents of the various types of swindlers and how they operate the Retail Merchants Committee is explain ing just how these nefarious campaigns are carried on. The chamber committee points out that the salesman that most persons get into trouble with is the itinerant salesman of magazines, mag-azines, who goes from door to door peddling his wares. Generally this is how they work a "leader" or "supervisor" gets together one, two or three carloads of young people. Before staiting out to cover the next town on their "route" they are rut through a "school." They are told just what to say and how to say i. You may be sure they know all the answers. Their biggest sales appeal is a play on the sympathy of the prospect. This one tells you, "I am working my way through colUge." The next one asks, "Won't you help me through nursing school?" while the next one might tell you, "I am trying to earn enough money to provide pro-vide an operation for my brother bro-ther who was wounded on Guam." Of course, there are numerous variations but all are based on a sympathy appeal. So the housewife house-wife fetls sorry and signs up. She pays a deposit and the sales man leaves town. "Then suppose the magazines fail to arrive well, you know the answer," says Forrest Hunter chairman of the committee. Recently Re-cently Cedar has been swamped swamp-ed with magazine solicitors claiming to be GIs, Mr. Hunter pointed out, and said, "Just remember re-member this the U. S. Government Govern-ment has seen to it that no veteran vet-eran needs to peddle magazines in order to get an education or medical attention. If you really want to subscribe to a magazine, place your subscription with someone wou know or a local magazine dealer." The retail merchants committee commit-tee Bd vised that before you buy from house-to-house salesmen be sure he has a Blue Card from the Chamber of Commerce. |
