Show 224 the lonely grave plot on the desert island today contains the remains of the couple who once made it their home After Mrs Yenner and her children left the island the buildings were allowed to fall into disrepair and ruin So The outbuildings have entirely disappeared except for a few cedar posts which mark the location of the stable and chicken coop The remains of the old wagon are still there Parts of an old wringer kitchen range iron pots and fragments of furniture are strevm about the yard in the vicinity of the old stone house As for the house itself it has long since become a mere ruin Contrary to common belief it was not burned there are no blackened walls or charred beams The stone walls still stand in almost their original form Lumber from the floors and roof has been torn away by various visitors to the island usually for use in the construction of shearing sheds loading chutes etc But the Skeleton still stands a solemn reminder of a one time happy existence on a barren island Since the Yfenners left the island other developments have taken place Several artesian wells have been driven in various places The one driven for the YiTenner family near the stone house has been dry since the early 1920 s Today it stands a dry pipe sticking out of the ground Two other wells dry were driven before 1920 About 1930 Wesley and Orvil Stoddard drove one near the south end of the island now |
