Show 67 Provot had become well acquainted with the upper waters of the Weber by the spring of 1825 when he met Ashley discovered later guided him to the Great Salt Lake-- ' Provot He probably had been trapping on Black’s Pork in 1824 there and followed this stream to its at the headwaters of the head Weber turned westward and arrived about which he knew so much the next spring Following the tributaries of the Weber and on down that stream he would naturally arrive at the mouth of the Weber during the fall of 1824 It is known that Provot did winter near the mouth of Weber river during the winter of 1824-2- 5 probably at or near the present site of Ogden where the Ogden the Weber to its mouth river joins the Weber If he followed at Great Salt Lake he may well have antedated Bridger as discoverer of the lake The topography of the region would make it possible though very unlikely for Provot to winter at Ogden without seeing the lake If before Bridger made his discovery he might well have at least seen the lake before On the other hand he may easily have arrived Bridger did at his winter camp very late in the year of 1824 after the he arrived at this winter Bridger discovery camp Lack of definite information leaves the question open for speculation During the winter of 1824-2- 5 17 Dale Ashlev-Smi- th on the shores Explorations 107 of Great |
