Show 157 Survey of the lake was finished yesterday having occupied the incessant labour of nearly three months Nothing remained now but to complete the observations upon the different triangulation stations that had been erected in the course of the examination The camp was broken up and we returned to our depot on Antelope Island discharged such of the hands as were no longer required procured a fresh supply of provisions from the city and on Wednesday July 3dmenstarted on our tourto take around the lake leaving three upon the island e3 requircharge of the herd and to prepare the ed for our return to the States The pack-saddl- part of the survey occupied triangulation of this us until the 16th during which time the lake was again traversed in every direction and observations were taken from the various stations that had been erected upon prominent headlands on the shore and on the summits of the several islands 22 The journal entry for July 16 says: Today we took a final leave of this singular lake The difficulty of finding water fit for the ordinary purposes of life — the necessity of transporting by means inadequate every pound of provisions and aevery totally ldrge drop of water needed for the daily consumption of — our depot and party of men the unavoidable distance of the barren savage inhospitality of the region we were one of unobliged to traverse have made this survey the salubrity of usually arduous and protracted toil But our constant the climate is such that notwithstanding time without the protection of tents not a man was seriously unwell and most of the party we re in the uninterrupted enjoyment of robust health A look at the map shows that Stansbury The criss-cross- ed angles as he made numerous crossings from island to island or from islands to various points on the mainland He could have planned his course and made his preliminary survey in much less time but would the lake from almost 22 the Great all possible Stansbury Exploration and Survey of the Valley of Salt Lake 212 |
