Show 150 come Antelope they named Egg Island It to the snail island which they later was covered with wild literally brandt blue herons cormorants waterfowl ducks white and innumerable flocks of gulls which had congregated here to build their nests 17e found great numbers of these built of sticks and rushes in the crevices of the rocks and supplied ourselves without scruple with as many eggs as we needed principally those of the herons being too early in the season for most of the other waterfowl it triangulation station erected here and the party continued its westward course Carrington Island so named in honor of Albert Carrington was reached after a trip of about twenty miles on very rough water during which time some members of the party became seasick It vas explored A and a to be was station erected on its summit The island was about six and a half miles in circumference found consisted of ledges of excellent roofing slate of which any quantity can be obtained By trial I ascertained that a nail could be driven15 through the layers almost as easily as through a shingle The summit No water was found so a dry camp was pitched on the shore About five miles north of Carrington Island is Hat in recent times as "Bird Island" After leaving Carrington Stansbury and his group went north to Hat and gave it that name because of its peculiar shape It was evidently not used as a nesting ground at that time at Island better known 14 Stansbury Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake 161 15 Loc cit |
