Show 96 Areas ana facilities Playgrounds were established on seven city and school playgrounds A total of 166 acres was used for recreational purposes which was far from the required standard set for this phase of the program It was estimated that the two city swimming pools could care for 1000 persons per day Two of the eleven tennis courts found in the city were lighted There were eleven softball and two diamonds owned ations golf courses one municipally and the other privately owned There were accomodfor a limited number of picnickers in some of the nine-ho- le parks Leadership The city had one city paid Recreation had charge of the entire program There was a playground director on each of the playgrounds and Supervisor who four assistant helpers all of whom were paid by the city Along with these directors and helpers the W P A had provided them with twenty-tw- o workers and the N Y A additional twenty gave an of the city paid workers were qualified through age education and experience to handle the program Many of the government paid help were lacking in proper training Most The playground program was conducted for ten weeks The total attendance amounted to approximately 1500 children each week Activities carried on included softball tennis swimming baseball badminton horseshoes basketball volleyball dancing crafts gymnastics nature activities |
