Show 45 supposition be correct and all appearances conspire to support it there must have been here at some former period a vast inland sea extending for hundreds of miles Stansbury made further observations of the ancient shore lines during his survey of the Great Salt Lake the following summer He made special note of the terraces on Fremont Island where the successive benches are clearly observable reaching nearly to the tip of the highest peak So impressed was he that he made a sketch of the formation and 1 1 Fremont first to visit that inserted it in his record island six years before Stansbury evidently failed to notice the marks since he made no mention of them However they were clearly visible to the writer upon his visits to the island in 1944 A study of the terraces shows that some are much more prominent than others indicating that the lake rose and fell at various times and maintained certain levels much longer than others giving its waves time to cut shore lines of greater magnitude at these levels of longer duration There are three of these exceptionally prominent terraces: Bonneville Provo and Stansbury By far the most prominent of these terraces chiefly height is the Bonneville terrace This old shore line is clearly visible on the mountain in the Magna because of the its 11 Stansbury Great Salt Lake Exploration and Survey of the Valley of facing 10£ |
